In the early 1970s, a group of innovative early childhood educators gathered together to determine a path for improving the quality of early care and education. The concept for the Child Development Associate (CDA®) Credential was born out of those meetings. After several years of development, the first CDA credential was awarded in 1975. In 1985, the Council for Professional Recognition, became the sole organization responsible for administering the CDA. Since then, more than 420,000 CDA credentials have been awarded, with approximately 18,000 early childhood professionals becoming new CDAs annually. Under the auspices of the Chancellor Dr Hassan El Kalla of Badr University Cairo (BUC), a partnership was entered with the US-based Council for Professional Recognition (the Council) to bring, for the first time in Africa, the opportunity for teachers of young children to earn the CDA credential. Since the Summer of 2018, BUC has offered the required 120-hours of training as well as additional supports to prepare CDA candidates for the credentialing exam. The CDA Program at BUC, in partnership with the Council, is designed to assess and credential early childhood education professionals for the first time in Africa. The Council sets policies and procedures for assessment and credentialing, publishes the CDA Competency Standards Books, Essentials for Working with Young Children Textbook, and other materials used for CDA credentialing, and administers the assessment of education professionals applying to earn the CDA credential. Requirement towards earning the credential are as follows:

- Course #8: The Early Childhood Professional
Throughout the CDA training, participants are assessed on their understanding of the material being presented through quizzes, written assignments, and a review of their workbooks. The final two weeks includes a critique of their draft competency statements, their philosophy of education and a practice CDA exam. This exam consisted of 65 multiple choice questions, very similar to those found on the actual CDA credentialing exam.
